Public Art
Lakewood Public Library conducts its operations out of two striking buildings designed by leading architects of the eras in which they were constructed. To inspire the peaceful, contemplative and creative atmosphere necessary for its mission, it has also been adorned by several works of public art that were paid for by private citizen who understood the sacred role of the Library in our community.
Transversion by Peter Diepenbrock
Sculptor and industrial designer Peter Diepenbrock installed Transversion, a 3,000 pound work of textured bronze and stainless steel, on the northwest lawn of Main Library on November 16, 2011. The piece was commissioned by the Lakewood Public Library Foundation without a single tax dollar and has become an instant Lakewood landmark.
Community Gallery Photography Collection
The north and south entrances to the Main Library are lined by the works of Lakewoodites who showed us how they saw Lakewood with photographs of the city’s icons, daily life and overlooked corners.
Richard Haas Murals
The world renowned artist Richard Haas added two striking murals the Main Library’s Grand Reading Room, thanks to a generous bequest from Doris Burkley, who taught at the Madison School for many years, and the Lakewood Public Library Foundation.
The Librainium
The Burgeon Group, a Phoenix design firm, designed two interactive, pre-literacy learning installations at both the Main Library and the Madison Branch.
David Deming Sculptures of Lake and Wood
David Deming created two sculpture groups of Ohio wildlife to grace the sides of the entryway to the Children’s and Youth Services area of Main Library.
Reed Thomason Mural
A captivating mural greets young children and their families in the Toddler Room at Lakewood Public Library’s Main Library. Crafted in 1977-78 by Reed Thomason, the oil on canvas panels depict characters from children’s and other classic literature.
