Tennis pro Tony Wendice (Ray Milland) suspects that his wealthy wife Margot (Grace Kelly) is having an affair with handsome playboy Mark Halliday (Robert Cummings). He blackmails an old army buddy (Anthony Dawson) into following his plan for the murder of his wife. Part of the plan is for Wendice to call Margo in the middle of the night, and when she gets up to answer the phone, Dawson will be there to execute the plan, and her.
