Documentary: The Last Trailer Park (2016) and Eviction City (2016) Directed by Raychel Brightman

Inside the last trailer park in Nassau County, a tight-knit community has dispersed after a spirited nine-year legal battle that the residents were never equipped to fight. Many of the eighty families lost hope and moved away long ago. Newsday followed the last remaining family as it struggled against a deadline to find an alternative to becoming homeless. Harvard University professor Matthew Desmond gives made a trailer park his home for about half a year and watched as families were evicted and forced into shelters. Desmond took thousands of pages of notes as he chronicled their stories. That research has been called “the most comprehensive, detailed data on American urban poverty, housing and eviction” and is now the foundation of his book Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City. After the screening of The Last Trailer Park, we will also be showing a news interview with Desmond as he talks about the documentary and his book
